Let's first answer the obvious question for beginners: What is an ATV?
Simply put, an ATV is an all-terrain vehicle -- a four-wheeler, dirt bike, snowmobile, etc. In other words, there are lots of types of ATVs.
One of the most popular types of ATV is the four-wheeler. Four-wheelers have several unique characteristics. First off, obviously they have four wheels! ;-) They are capable of towing heavy loads, hauling materials in a flatbed attached to the ATV, or using a winch to get out of a sticky situation. A four-wheeler can tackle almost any terrain, including forests, swamps, snow, rocks... almost anything!
All of these reasons are why four-wheelers are among the most popular of all ATV purchases.
Another favorite, especially among the younger crowd, is the dirt bike. This vehicle is not traditionally thought of as an ATV, but in the true spirit of the word, it is. A dirt bike can go almost anywhere a four-wheeler can, and sometimes it can go places even a four-wheeler couldn't!
Dirt bikes are popular among a growing racing scene, as well as the casual enthusiast who likes to grab a bit of recreation on their ATV.
Dirt bikes have small but powerful engines, two wheels, and a light frame. A dirt bike looks like a lightweight version of a regular motorcycle, with some off-road tires tossed on.
Snowmobiles are also very popular. As with dirt bikes, there are those who race snowmobiles. There are also those who use this ATV for mountainous search and rescue operations. And, of course, there is the average person who uses their snowmobile for work or pleasure.
